Hubert Poklington-Smythe
Born and educated in Hong Kong where his father was a senior diplomat at the British Embassy, Hubert's early musical influences were awakened by his mother's interest in the ukulele. She was often to be seen sitting with her skirts trailing over the battlements of the fortified hilltop village at Hoshangahad, playing as the sun set over the sultry valley below.

Studying the piano from an early age, Hubert was awarded a scholarship to study at the Paris Conservatoire with Nadia Boulanger and Pierre Boulez. Having dabbled with exotic instruments such as the Theremin, his chance debut on the Ondes Martenot occurred when the main exponent of this elusive instrument, Jacques Unemomento, was incapacitated by a freak electric shock during a rehearsal for an open air concert outside the Louvre to welcome the then new President of Alcharca to Paris.
The rest is history, and Hubert has been reaping the benefits of this serendipity ever since.

The C O is very lucky to be able to count Hubert as one of it's occasional players. When the orchestra strays into that part of the repertoire that requires such instruments, the illustrious Hubert can be seen playing the Ondes Martenot alongside the regular members of the Charnwood Orchestra.

Hubert's hobbies include ice skating and long rambling walks with his dog, La La, in the Charnwood Forest.
