
Marie Vassiliou studied Singing and Viola at the Royal
College of Music, where she won numerous prizes and
the Tagore Gold Medal, as outstanding student of her
year.
Marie has performed widely in the UK, including all
the major London concert venues, and at such leading
festivals as the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
and the BBC Proms.
Known for her versatility she has recently returned
from triumphant début recitals in Zurich &
the Far East and has broadcast on BBC Radio 3, 4 &
Radio France and made several recordings.
In opera she has worked in Austria, Germany, Italy,
Japan, Mexico, Russia and the USA, in a wide range
of major roles from the baroque to the present day,
including: Anne Trulove, Belinda, La Calisto, Gilda,
Governess, Ilia, Micaela, Mimi, Nedda, Pamina, Poppea,
Tatyana, Theodora, Violetta; as well as Belisa (Holt's
Nightingale's to Blame, Austrian premiere) and Mathilda
(Westbrook's Cape Gloss, world premiere, one-woman
opera written for Marie). Conductors with whom she
has worked include: Martyn Brabbins, Sir Andrew Davis,
Edward Gardner, Vernon Handley, Nicholas Kok, Wayne
Marshall & Sir David Willcocks.
She has particularly established herself as an interpreter
of Baroque & Contemporary music and has performed
as a soloist with Janiculum, Purcell Quartet, Composers'
Ensemble, Contemporary Consort, Continuum, Endymion
and the Philharmonia, giving many premières.
Premieres include works by Dutilleux, Tippett and
Judith Weir, as well as works written especially for
her by Richard Chew, Anthony Gilbert and Kenneth Hesketh.
Engagements have included: Tippett's 'The Heart's
Assurance' (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival;
also Poland premiere at the Wratislavia Cantans Festival),
Julian Anderson's 'Seadrift' (BBC Proms season), Anthony
Gilbert's 'Beastly Jingles' (RFH with the Philharmonia),
Gilbert's 'Long White Moonlight' (Purcell Room with
Endymion), Arlene Sierra's 3 Descriptions (ROH Crush
Room), Stumbling Over Infinity (opera by Harvey Brough,
Linbury Studio, ROH).
She is also a member of the Guildhall School of Music
senior vocal coaching staff.
